I feel like the average viewer of this image may be able to answer my question.
-What is the purpose of racing the man near Gerudo’s Valley? Every time I raced him he always claimed to beat me by one second. Is there some way to use the ‘lens of truth’? I must have beaten the game 3 times and I never understood the point of that character.

Every time I play OoT this owl annoys the shit out of me. I think Miyamoto (or the programers) put it in there for the lulz.

Imagine how many fans could’ve achieved Zelda bliss if only the programmers had allowed us to trap Navi and a bottle and hurl the Master Sword at the Owl…
I remember getting this game, playing it while conversing on an IRC with other people doing the same. We’d compare notes, tricks that we did; we did not want to use any guides but figure the game out all on our own.
In the end, when the final scene is playing and Link is young again, man I just sat there looking at that freeze frame, wondering what I was going to do next. I had spent days playing this game, conversing with fellow peers joined in my same journey… now what?
Three cheers for fail safe.

When you race him, are you a child or adult? As a child you can slap on the bunny ears and catch him to get access to a special item. I think as an adult you can race him with Epona but I don’t remember why. I never actually finished the game.
Point to the lens of truth? I remember you could use it to cheat in that treasure chest mini-game in Hyrule market. I think you’re meant to use it to fight the boss of the Shadow Temple. Otherwise I have no idea.
Apparently it’s impossible to beat him. There aren’t even any “congratulating” texts in the Rom for the N64 version. However there is one on the Gamecube “Master Quest” edition: http://www.zeldalegends.net/index.php?n=z64text , so it looks like there might be a way to beat him if you have OoT for Gamecube.
That was all about the time. Manage to stay close to him and there’s a reward. Manage to do the race within a minute after beating it and there’ll be another reward.
Other than that, he just cheats.
